Twelve pilot WPAs were developed in 2005 to provide insight on cooperative prevention. WPAs are located in eastern Montana, east of the Continental Divide, a region largely dominated by weed-free plains grassland. We delineated WPAs based on invasion threat, ecological status, geographic characteristics, and the number of landowners willing to support the development of invasive weed prevention programs. WPAs are designated with roadside signs to publicize the ecological status of these areas and build public support in prevention.
